Book Craft Courses at the Grange Ellesmere

Our Book Centre at the Grange is dedicated to teaching and promoting all the skills of the craft of making beautiful books. The centre is housed in restored outbuildings at the Grange just a few yards from the main house. We have a fully equipped bindery set around an old courtyard, with sewing frames, book and standing presses, foil embossing machine, guillotine, board cutter and other ancillary equipment.

The press room houses our fully restored Vandercook Proofing Press, Eagle and Arab platens, Albion and five Adanas. We have a composition room with a range of type including a good selection of unusual wooden type.

The Vandercook is widely used by printers, typesetters and the graphic arts industry throughout the world for printing high quality proofs and small production runs.

We run courses in
marbling, letterpress printing and bookbinding, most of which are suitable both for those who want to learn a new craft, possibly for a change in vocation, but also for those who would just like a weekend away enjoying learning some new and unusual skills. The Grange offers accommodation and full board in a lovely country house setting so when you are not working in the print room, bindery or conservatory studio, you can enjoy the ten acres of grounds or the comfortable and spacious sitting rooms and library.
